Digitization

Consulting

Do you sometimes despair at your museum's data storage because it takes too long to search for a specific image? Do you lose track in the flood of emails? Would you like a modern software solution with seamless interfaces to other systems?

Digitization has been a key driver for the transformation of museums for many years. But driving this forward is no easy task. The busy working day of museum professionals leaves little time to develop a digital museum strategy in line with the overall strategy. Where should you even start when the technological possibilities are developing so rapidly? Are digital mediation offerings necessary and do museums now also have to deal with AI tools? What software solutions are available on the market and how can sustainable solutions be developed and data silos prevented?

If you have these and other questions, we will be happy to help. We can advise you on the following topics:

Digital museum strategy

Strategy for the digital transformation and modernization of a museum

A digital strategy supports and enhances the museum's objectives through the effective use of digital technologies. Given the rapidly changing possibilities, the thought of an all-encompassing digital strategy can be overwhelming and often remains utopian. We therefore recommend defining clear goals and priorities and then gradually implementing the necessary foundations, guided by best practice.

Digital mediation

Use of new technologies for exhibitions and the visitor experience

Digital technologies are opening up new ways to make exhibitions more diverse - be it through audio guides on smartphones or touchscreens. Immersive experiences allow visitors to delve deeper into the exhibition themes and learn interactively. This is how we use technology.

We use augmented reality (AR) as a visual and experiential way of imparting knowledge to make hidden details and stories visible and to virtually present works that are not allowed to leave the depot or have been lost. Artificial intelligence helps us to make exhibition experiences very personal and interactive - via a website, as an app or integrated into an AR experience.

Online collection presentation

Maintenance and public accessibility of digital collections

Not all interested parties are able to visit an exhibition on site, and not all objects in the collection can be exhibited. An online platform enables long-term access to the collection for scientists, curators and the interested public. In this way, collection objects can be shown worldwide and digitally compiled into new thematic collections.

Before content can be published, numerous questions need to be clarified, processes coordinated and standards for object description defined. This includes adjustments to the collection management system (CMS, e.g. MuseumPlus) to enable work with controlled vocabularies and thesauri and to enrich research data with additional information such as geodata or references to other portals. This forms the basis for linked open data and automated translations. Automated interfaces between the CMS and the DAM system are also required and copyright issues need to be clarified.

Media archive

Professional creation and management of media data

The daily work in museums generates a constantly growing number of digital images and other multimedia content. Creating and managing these files is a major challenge. How can a central media repository be created that makes searching for images child's play? A media standard developed together with the institution provides a remedy. It defines how the files are created and stored in order to preserve them in the long term and make them accessible to all departments via a digital asset management (DAM) system. A professional solution forms the basis for later automation and the creation of a clear long-term archive.

Needs analyses

Evaluation of new software solutions

There are specialized software solutions for more and more areas of museum operations that help to overcome daily challenges. As the requirements in every museum are different, a careful needs analysis is essential. The more comprehensive the software you are looking for, the more important it is that it can be integrated into the existing system landscape. It should offer all the necessary functions and interfaces and be adaptable to your own requirements if necessary. We support you throughout the entire evaluation process right through to implementation. Starting with the creation of a catalog of requirements, a market analysis and clarifications with providers, we can help with the introduction right through to a public tender and internal training. We offer independent and transparent advice to find contemporary and sustainable solutions for your company.

Workflows

Optimizing workflows with the help of digitalization

Digitalization opens up various opportunities to improve existing workflows. There are processes in every museum department that can be simplified with fresh ideas and digital tools. These range from restoration to application management, repro requests, location management, exhibition planning, project management, synchronization of images and metadata to collaborative platforms.

Augmented Reality

Expanding knowledge transfer - vividly, as an experience and without the need for space

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that moves people - physically and emotionally. It is a unique form of presenting multimedia content. We use this opportunity to convey cultural assets in a visually tangible, interactive and sustainable way.

With our Artverse app and the underlying content management system (CMS), we enable all cultural institutions to use AR independently. In addition, we offer workshops for both museum professionals and the public to familiarize themselves with the technology and learn about its peculiarities.

Artificial intelligence

Use of AI in the museum for exhibitions, administration and education

Artificial intelligence (AI) also has an impact on the museum world. So it's worth getting to grips with it now. It can be used both in the day-to-day work of museums in a wide variety of areas and in education. AI opens up new opportunities to simplify processes, personalize the visitor experience and create inclusive offerings.
AI not only offers numerous potential applications, but also harbors risks. An open but critical approach is therefore essential. In addition to consultations, Freisicht also offers workshops specially designed for museum professionals.
